My previous growing up memoir told of my first kiss.

And you may remember how I was lucky enough to go on the school Paris trip when I was fourteen. At the time, my mum and stepfather had encouraged me to find a Saturday job, which would help me fund outings with friends.

Indeed, Mum put a word in for me at the salon where I had received my first trendy haircut, and so I ended up with a weekend job at the local hairdressers. Even though I hated washing people’s hair, I enjoyed the extra money.

By now I had just turned fifteen and attended a youth club(YC) with one of my best childhood friends, Jane. She is still a friend to this day.

A guy we called Big John ran the YC and was also joint owner of the village green grocer…
