Your Anger Is Not Your Enemy

My sleep deprived soul was sleeping the other day, when this friend of mine crashed into my room with a bang. She jolted me up from sleep, and it completely ruined my mood. I was on two hours of sleep every day for the last 15 days. I stopped myself from yelling at her. The anger bottled up within me for the moment but later in the day, I told her about how badly I needed to sleep and although she didn’t know that, it was best to leave me alone. She told me how guilty she was because of it, and said that she would never do it again.

Growing up, I was surrounded by people who would project their anger on me even when it was not my fault. I was expected to suffer in silence as a sign of respect. This made me realise how much destruction anger can bring. I promised myself to never get angry at anyone, specially when they were not the cause of it. As a result, I grew up to be an adult who rarely ever gets angry. But when I do, it’s Holy moly Jesus Christ.

It took me a lot of time to realise that my anger is not my enemy. When you get angry at someone, it’s because you don’t feel aligned with their values. They are overstepping your boundaries, and your soul does not permit that, which is healthy. You can either express it or suppress it.

If you choose to suppress it, it will get stored in your body for the moment. Later on in life, this suppressed emotion will need you to release it in one way or another. And for me, it has always been worse. The more you store it, the more situations you will be put in, which will demand you to release your emotions.

However, if you choose to release it, you will clear your path of all the stuck negative trauma and pave the way for all the good things. And I know for one thing that you clicked on this article because you believe that your anger is meant to teach you something. Your anger isn’t your enemy. It is leading you to a path of self discovery and healing if you know how to follow it correctly. Trust me, if you can get a hold of how to deal with your anger, you will be unstoppable.

Now the question is, how do you release your anger?

Specially when you are brimming with it, on the verge of exploding like a volcano.

Here’s the trick-

You first need to identify when you are getting angry. Most people don’t even know when and how their anger spikes up. Stay in your body and notice your emotions instead of being them. Notice how you are feeling when you get triggered.

For a detailed version on how to deal with triggers, click here.

When you know that you are angry, assess whether it is a healthy environment for you to release your anger at the moment or not. For example, if you are in front of your boss, who is making you angry, it is probably not a good place to release your anger. On the other hand, if you are in front of a person who understands you on a deeper level and will not judge you for your emotions, you can go ahead and do so.

If you are unable to release your anger like in the first example, you can do it in a healthier way. Releasing your anger means that you have to be patient with yourself and love yourself enough to go through the process smoothly.

The best way to go about it is through meditation. Meditation combined with yoga has worked the best for me, and I would advise you to go for the same. There are other somatic healing sessions that can help you with this too.

Find out what works best for you and keep practising it. Once you have released your anger, you will feel as light as a cloud and as free as a bird. There is nothing compared to a spiritual cleanse. So help yourself and do the honours.
