Medium Account Review For Yourself
Why it’s a good idea to do one — New following feature
Account assessments are for those who want to grow beyond just a profile.
I have to look at the new account daily due to I have to add some writers to the pub, or else they think I’m not working hard enough.
There is no right or wrong, but the first impression is very real. Even though when I’m looking to add a writer based on what they write, i.e., topics, or if they sound a bit robotic, or when I can’t even find your personal voice after looking over the top 3 articles on your profile.
I try not to judge the book by its cover, but I often find a few mistakes that new accounts are making.
When I started here, I also got excited when someone followed me, I often would take a look at their profile to see if the topic they wrote aligns with what I do.
Then I would go and pick an article to read, and if I like it, there’s a 50% chance I’ll follow that writer.
However, the point I’m trying to make is that the number of people you are following is public data, which is being used subjectively for or against you.
Your first impression on the internet is likely your last.
How many do you follow and why?
When it comes to giving a good impression, it does help if you want to make friends while you enjoy writing anywhere.
Most writing platforms have follower and following counts.
Regardless of how your profile looks in design terms, the number of followers is the first thing anyone would look at if they do not already know you.
The next thing they may look at is how many people you are following.
Take me, for example, I follow 847 people, but it’s actually less, since many of them are publications.
I currently have 6,941 followers, these two numbers directly reflect how you use Medium and possibly who you are in terms of whether I’m going to follow anyone or not.
I try to keep this number below 15% (6,941x0.15=1,041)
Everything has two sides, while some might not be bothered by how many people you are trying to follow, but there are many who think following too many accounts, especially when you are new, is a bit spammy.
Of course, this is more of a subjective view, but if you are spending too much time following others and not even given a moment to interact with them, it does look like we are just adding to our list for appreciation.
As we all have friends or someone that we want to follow as a reminder, since there is no possible way to check out all those that we follow.
New feature on Medium
Since we are talking about followers, there is a new update this week with the follower button from desktop mode, where you can choose to get an email notification when an author you follow publishes a new article.
They removed/replaced the subscribe button on the article for the reader to have a chance to choose if they want to get an email from each author that they read.
This is not a game changer, but I hope it does help give the reader an intentional reading experience, and I just also hope they do send out the emails on time.
Final words
People love to read new stuff from the author they follow in general.
But when anyone focuses too much on following others and not interacting or writing their own work, it gives a faulty impression that they are unlikely to have the time to read or interact.
This will impact an account’s growth over time.
Thanks for Reading
