NATURE’S BEAUTY
And Then My Heart With Pleasure Fills, And Dances With the Daffodils
I am reminded of Wordsworth’s words each year as I gaze out at my front yard
Growing up in India, we learned William Wordsworth’s poem “I Wander Lonely as a Cloud” in school.
The magical words carried us to that distant unseen place- “beside the lake, beneath the trees, fluttering and dancing in the breeze”. The bliss of solitude in the poet’s heart made an everlasting mark. I could “see” the dancing daffodils with my inward eye as I read the poem.
Although I’d never seen a daffodil in my life, I fell in love with them. I had memorized how the delicate petals unfurled, and how the trumpet center drew the attention. It was aspirational to draw daffodils that I’d never met on the front cover of my activity books.
Fast forward to my 20s, I immigrated to the U.S.
That first spring, seeing daffodils with my own eyes was exhilarating, to say the least. “Tossing their heads in sprightly dance”- I saw why Wordsworth was inspired by these happy blooms.
