How Celebrities’ Private Jet Habits Are Worsening the Climate Crisis
Private jets are a luxury that few can afford, but many celebrities seem to enjoy. However, this indulgence comes at a high environmental cost, as a recent study reveals. The study, conducted by a UK-based sustainability marketing agency, analyzed the flight data of celebrities with the highest private jet emissions. The results are shocking, to say the least.
The study collected data from over 1,500 flights and revealed that from January to July 2022, celebrities have emitted an average of 3376.64 tonnes of CO2 each, only from flying with their planes. To put that into perspective, the average person emits only 7 tonnes of CO2 in an entire year. That means celebrities have emitted 482.37 times more than the average person’s annual emissions, just from their private jet usage.
Private jets are known to have a disproportionate impact on the environment. Emissions per mile traveled are significantly less efficient than any other form of transport. However, the average person flying on a packed passenger flight somewhat mitigates this impact. The real trouble with air travel is those flying privately.
