In the Utopian refuge under Yucca Mountain. Charlene learns the city’s secret. As their radioactive power source dies, sacrifices must be made. To keep the population stable, she agrees to keep the secret.
“Good, thank you,” Professor Jones said. “As you think about this day, I’m sure you will see that this is the best.” He turned to refill his cup with tea. “How long do you think it will be? That is, when will we be forced to reduce the population?” Professor Jones asked.
Charlene envisioned the calculations she had completed and made some mental extrapolations. “I’d guess about fifty years, with the new high density plastics.”
