Remember the uproar that occurred when some people called on city governments to defund the police?

The outrage now should be much, much louder. The development of treatments for cancer and Alzheimer’s are being defunded. It’s happening right now and affects people across the political spectrum.

Giving up the war on cancer

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the largest funder of cancer research in the world. Thanks largely to the NIH, overall .

Unfortunately, this era of success will quickly become a memory as the Trump administration hollows out the NIH through funding and staff cuts. Approximately 1,200 employees were laid off in February and thousands more cuts are planned. quoted a former director of the National Cancer Institute (a part of the NIH), Dr. Kimryn Rathmell in saying, “Discoveries are going to be delayed, if they ever happen.”

The reported on NIH scientists who demonstrated a possible breakthrough in fighting gastrointestinal cancers. It’s a new approach using a patient’s own immune system…
