The Twelve-Angled Stone in Cusco, Peru
A small tourist attraction that celebrates Inca Empire craftsmanship
I recently wrote about my travel experience in Cusco, Peru, highlighting the city’s beauty and celebration of craftsmanship. One very small attraction that I didn’t mention is the Twelve-Angled Stone.
If they charged admission, then this would be a “tourist trap.” It’s simply a single interesting stone within a wall. Fortunately, it’s in a public space, available for all to see.
The wall was part of an Inca palace, probably built in the 15th century. The Twelve-Angled Stone is special because it showcases the Inca’s advanced understanding of geometry and construction — somehow getting these enormous irregular stones to fit together perfectly.
