Do Not Compromise On Justice
This is all the same fight, and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise
One of the most common refrains we hear is to “pick our battles.” As people with limited time on this earth, finite mental energy, and only so many resources, it makes sense to know our limits and not overexert ourselves.
But there’s a related fallacy, whereby we should only be focusing on “the most important battles.” Logically, it makes a certain amount of sense: why focus on cause A when cause B is more important?
In reality, such practices ensure that we never get accomplish anything.
There will always be a “more important” cause than the particular one you’re fighting at the moment and this kind of ranking leads to paralysis instead of progress.
A recent post by suggested that, while she’s normally focused on women’s rights, the political stakes are too important at the moment and we need to focus on getting rid of Trump.
I’m normally hyper-focused on equality for women worldwide, but I can’t worry about that now when the U.S. ship of state is sinking.
I like much of Patsy’s writing (and even that particular article, on the whole), but my feeling is this specific point is a bunch of hogwash.
