“Mom, I told my teacher today that all I wanted for Christmas was to go to church but my mom won’t let me.”

I stopped breathing before he finished the sentence.

I remembered a phrase a teacher once told me that has stayed with me.

If you don’t believe everything he/she says about me, I will do the same about you.

I laughed it off, but I didn't fully understand her statement until my son said those words to me.

We live in the heart of the Bible Belt. No one ever asks if you go to church; they ask WHERE you go to church. There are so many churches you can stand anywhere in town throw a rock and hit one. It is assumed that everyone goes to church. I could almost see the look on his teacher’s face when he told her those words.

She probably cried.

I am certain that my sweetheart of a son failed to mention the endless list of Christmas gifts he had been making since Halloween.

We don't go to church. I have always considered myself spiritual just not religious. I have never been a fan of organized religion or attending worship services.
