A Celebrity Gave My Grandpa A Video Shout-Out
My grandpa’s delusional optimism despite the odds gives way for a Christmas miracle
Sitting at the edge of his seat, my grandpa watches his favorite show. A few hours later, the host on our TV, an investor on Shark Tank Mexico, will be sending him a video message.
“I want to stay strong for my boxing match with Canelo,” my 91-year-old abuelito tells me as he spins on his stationary bike in front of the TV, “but only if they pay me. I won’t box him for free.”
After his workout, my abuelito leans forward with his eyes wide open directed at the TV. He interlocks his fingers because Grandma is no longer here to hold his hand. He rarely blinks. The TV plays about functional medicine. We are not the only ones watching this two-hour-long interview. The Cracks: Brilliant Minds podcast has 2.3 million views.
Halfway through the video, the house phone rings. Mom is calling to pick us up.
“No,” Abuelito says, “I’m still watching Cracks.”
