My State Is Banning Cellphones Next School Year
Teachers' prayers have been answered!
Last week, my home state of Kentucky did something many educators have been praying for. Beginning next school year, districts can ban cellphones during instructional time or the whole school day. While parents and students have complained about the change, this is music to educators' ears.
First, it is no surprise that students have become addicted to technology. Even as adults, many of us are guilty of constantly looking at our phones (I will admit I am guilty of this occasionally). Studies have shown that constant use of cellphones has led to rises in .
With the rise of social media and the increased access younger people have to it, there has been an uptick in mental health issues in students. They feel like they need to interact online, and they are missing out if they are not connected. There has also been a rise in cyberbullying, something my generation did not have to deal with.
When many schools went virtual during the COVID-19 pandemic, tablets and laptops became essential learning tools. There are also arguments that we depend more on technology as a society to do everyday tasks; for instance, I typed this article on my computer instead of writing it on paper.
