Wills Goes for a Drive

Wills didn’t know why he was driving.

He got up that morning, had his coffee (Kona blend, his and Roberta’s favorite), grabbed his keys from the small wicker basket on the hall table, and left.

The traffic on Route 2 heading west at 7 AM was light. There were plenty of cars running in the opposite direction, toward Boston, toward jobs, toward the proverbial rat race. Wills was glad he was retired and didn’t have to deal with that anymore.

When he set out about half an hour ago he thought about what music he wanted to listen to on his phone. He’d already changed his mind twice, eventually deciding to put on the radio. Let the DJ decide. But the constant barrage of commercials with hardly any songs annoyed him, so he shut it off completely. Roberta sometimes preferred to travel in silence anyway.

October was a great month around this area. The foliage had started changing colors in many places, especially along this stretch. Autumn was Roberta’s favorite season, and she loved nothing more than a long day trip, especially when she could be back in her bed at the end of it. Wills was glad to be her wheelman.
