Marco Sebastian Changed His Name

The final installment of the Marco and Finleigh trilogy

Even as Marco Sebastian offered his camera to his guests, film student Finleigh yanked it from his hands. Film school Chair Alison Lee huddled next to Finleigh to review the footage. Alison repeatedly repositioned Finleigh’s grasp on the camera so she could follow along.

The video mesmerized the two as much as Marco’s unveiled sculpture had moments before. The two viewed Marco shirtless and sometimes pantsless but always thickly covered in marble dust. He constantly cleaned his goggles. His dark hair turned white. The dust sanitized his body. In his still moments, one could mistake him for a sculpture until he wiped the sweat from his brow.

Finleigh skipped ahead to where the sculpture began to reveal itself. When she recognized herself in the marble, she paused the video and zoomed in. Alison prodded her to restart.

“In a second,” Finleigh said. She held the camera up against the just unveiled sculpture, comparing the two. “Look at her. Just look.”

The work

Over the coming months, Finleigh and Alison visited Marco’s apartment five times per week. In the beginning, Finleigh took hours to set up the lighting and camera…
