Let’s face it, living in a society isn’t always a bed of roses. As French existentialist philosopher and playwright Jean-Paul Sartre famously wrote as a line in his play Huis Clos, “L’enfer c’est les autres” (Hell is other people). He surely knew his stuff: after all, he lived in that rudest of places, Paris.
It could be said that any gathering of more than two people (consider the manifest intolerance of the saying “Three’s a crowd”) will generate some level of friction. And that friction logically multiplies exponentially with any increase in the number of people around us.
As in most things, there’s a wide scope of unsocial behavior percolating in every corner of humanity.
Even in the most bucolic villages and farm communities, there’s outright criminality, ranging from the severe stuff to misdemeanors like petty theft, vandalism, and affray. In cities: Fuhgeddaboudit.
