I once encountered a story that changed my perspective on life. It redefined the words “purpose” and “meaning.”
I didn’t find this story on Medium. I found it in ancient texts, and with any luck, you’re already familiar with it.
As with many olden tales, this story has several variations. But the general gist of it goes like this:
A man goes on a journey and gives three of his servants different amounts of talents (a measure of wealth). The man gives five talents to Servant A, two to Servant B, and one to Servant C — according to their abilities.
Servant A invests his five talents and gains five more.
Servant B invests his two talents and gains two more.
But Servant C? He can’t be bothered. He buries his single talent in the ground. And waits…
When their master returns, he rewards Servants A and B for their diligence and punishes Servant C for his laziness. In some alternate universes, depending on which version of the story you read, the master takes the talent from C and gives it to A.
