As I was responding to

’s story, The Bird That Flew Freely, I mentioned that my kids had birds, iguanas, and snakes, and stories about them popped into my head. One in particular was about our pet, Jake the snake.

My best friend, Lora, and I became inseparable when we met at work one day and discovered many interests in common, including being single parents with children of similar ages and living within a mile of each other.

Taking turns making dinner and having playdates for the kids became something we looked forward to. However, Lora had a habit of dropping her large tote bag wherever she happened to be sitting.

One night as she prepared to go home, she collected her daughter, said, “See you at work tomorrow,” and reached for her bag. Suddenly, she let out an ear-piercing scream, followed by, “There’s a big snake in my bag!”

I had to think of how that was possible before realizing it was my son’s two-foot-long python, who must have ventured out looking for a warmer place to sleep. What could be better than a bag full of neat stuff!
