Why Southern Winds?
Yes, there are outstanding publications on environmentalism, climate change, science, and politics here on Medium, and they are collaborating with their part, amplifying voices and bringing compelling stories to all corners of the world.
But they mostly focus on the Global North and mass-media stories.
Southern Winds is all about those stories from the overlooked corners of the world. Antarctica does not get even half the headlines the Artic does; Patagonia, to most, is a brand rather than one of the most magnificent corners of the world; Africa is known for safaris and bedouin tents, not for the humanitarian needs or the overreaching stories like South Sudan making it to the Olympics; Bangladesh’s focus is mainly on what happens in urban areas like Dhaka, but the coastal eastern areas are highly vulnerable to rising sea levels, as well as the instagrammable Polynesian islands of the Pacific.
