Welcome back! In the last chapter, my demon brother encourages me to jump into the big, dark hole in our backyard. (Yeah, not very tempting.)

“Come in,” Mike said again. The hole made his voice echo and warp. “We’re having a party.”

Needless to say, I didn’t lower myself down. Any party invitation with “Big scary hole” listed under “Location” was not the party for me.

This Imposter Mike, this fake little brother, was very, very dangerous. I knew that. But if I wanted to survive till Mom returned, if I wanted to save the real Mike, I needed some answers. Fast.

Something squeaked behind me.

My bones jumped in my skin.

It squeaked again.

I turned around. And I saw Verona, exactly where she was before, scrubbing mud slowly into the window.

The broken girl in the attic had said that some of the zombies were more aware than others. Maybe because they died more recently. Maybe because their stomach-clockwork was less rusted. Whatever the reason, I could tell that not every zombie was the same. I genuinely hoped that, if something bad happened to me, Verona might be willing to help.
