It was 2010, and I was 14 years old, just getting introduced to the world of social media through Facebook.
At that age, boys around me were quite desperate to talk to girls and befriend them. So, for teenage boys like us, Facebook was not a way to connect with friends but a medium to meet new girls.
And it was relatively easier to talk to random girls on social media than in real life. The anonymity of the internet made the task of socializing less terrifying and it also meant that the options were infinite.
My friends and I used to send random messages to a lot of girls expecting some to reply and get their numbers and then flaunt in front of everyone like we had achieved something. We were like pigeons in the park, flinging messages at girls, hoping for a crumb of their attention.
It took me some time, but I finally cracked the code. I had the highest response rate among my friends. The reason was that everyone used to send basic “Hi” or “How are you” messages.
