Chapter 1
Deliria entered the drug store all but stealth for her estrogen patch.
She hated her situation. Hated her body. Hated why she needed the patches. But most of all, she hated what the patches would never do for her. She wasn’t fooled by promises of transformation through drugs or surgery — a cut here, a pill there, no, they wouldn’t give her the child she really wanted.
No one knew how far the universe would expand before it contracted back into infinity.
No one knew what new shape the universe would take when it did.
Perhaps in the next iteration of existence — when the universe first turned dark and cold, then exploded again with abundance — only trans people would be capable of reproduction. Next time, it would be cis people who yearned for their bodies to serve as the cradle of life but found themselves forever denied.
In the meantime, she clung to videos of people giving birth, of mothers holding their newborn children, of proud parents…
