The Origins of Black History Month
Why do we celebrate Black history month?
“History” lied about who we were, and someone chose to get out front.
Finding misinformation baked into the system
Carter G Woodson decided to assist them.
Started out small. 1926 Negro History Week.
It showed my people they need not be meek.
Designed to equip my fore-bearers to resist their racial domination.
Telling them it's alright to use your voice in this nation.
To dispel the racial lie that America upholds with policy.
To have pride in the fact they deserved to be free.
As armor against a world that said they were no better than servants.
To cause a needed learning disturbance.
It disrupts the damaging myth based curriculum.
Disputes the anti-black that’s part of that system.
Told them from whence they actually come.
Helped them understand they weren’t lazy or dumb.
Not just the descendants of slaves, but of successful thriving communities.
Not the trash of the planet, but the cousins of kings!
We celebrate still because this country has not changed.
We’ve not come far enough to release the reins.
