What Does Hard Right Actually Mean?

Is it just a slur to dissuade voters from a free democratic choice?

Last week was local council election time in Britain. The least exciting political event in the universe. As expected, Nigel Farage and his Reform Party made huge gains at the expense of the traditional so-called left and right parties. The parties who stopped representing their voters a long while back.

I was intrigued by a headline from CNN. It referred to Farage’s far-right Reform Party. The first line of the article repeats the slur with the alternate term hard-right.

Get it? Hard right. Far right. Be very afraid.

The rest of the CNN article sheds little light on the hard right elements of Reform. There is one line from a Professor of Politics which states

Farage’s “populist radical right insurgency” also poses a threat to Labour, targeting working-class voters with pledges to curb immigration, create jobs and cut government waste.
