What a dog walk taught me about the labels we wear

One of the great things about walking a dog is meeting all sorts of people.
Often the conversation, if there is one, will be about the dogs or the weather. Nice day — yes it is. Nice dog — no, it isn’t.
Other times it can be a more serious affair.
On this occasion the walker wanted to talk about their son who has ADHD. Or whatever label the medical profession puts on it. You need a label to get help — extra care, medication, that sort of thing. And that means a diagnosis.
She explained various things about ADHD while I asked the occasional question. Partly from interest and partly to check my voice was still working.
I asked about the difference between ADHD and autism which passed another five minutes.
My reason for the autism query was my suspicion that I may always have been slightly outside the normal range. A bit odd they might say. I remember my mother once saying “He’s intelligent, but he’s OK” to a family member.
