Tipping servers is always a controversial topic.

You wonder how much you should tip people.

Well, after eating at thousands of restaurants, I have an easy system that I always use.

You see, every wait staff member starts at the max, at least what I consider the max, which is 20% for the service they provide. After that, it can go down from there depending on how attentive the waiter or waitress is.

Granted, sometimes work gets busy, and I adjust my tip based on that.

When I enter a restaurant, the four criteria I use to reduce the tip

are:

1. The waiter forgot an order I made ~ Attention to detail is key

2. The staff does not follow up after the food is served ~ Many times, something could be missing, or the order was not correct

3. The waiter refills my water without asking ~ This should be done, no questions asked

4. The waiter is rude or disrespectful ~ The customer is always right, and waiters should do their best to support them

Giving tips is a simple process.

You should have your standard tip and subtract from there based on the service you’re given.

After that, thinking about giving tips is simple based on the service you’re given.

Do you have a rule for giving tips to servers?
