Choosing Happiness Over Jealousy & Comparison
How a ‘day at the beach’ changed my perspective
The photo
I woke up one morning feeling good about my day until I scrolled on social media and saw a friend’s selfie at the beach. I immediately felt jealous and my plans for the day no longer felt special.
I then had to laugh at myself — that I somehow thought I was more entitled to or deserving of a vacation. And that someone else’s happiness could make me unhappy.
The choice
I made a choice that day to be happy for my friend.
AND to be happy for myself.
There’s enough happiness to go around, isn’t there?! It’s not like my friend could take all the happiness and there would be none left for me.
It was simply a choice to reframe my thoughts.
Making changes
Since then, I’ve spent far less time on social media and more time enjoying life.
I chose to ‘turn off’ the things that made me compare or feel jealous of others. I stopped exposing myself to media that made me feel ‘less than’…
