A flat lay of affordable, stylish clothing arranged on a soft mauve background. The display includes casual and dressy items like jeans, t-shirts, a ribbed tank, and a wrap dress in warm shades of pink, mustard yellow, rust, and coral. Each piece has a visible price tag ranging from $5 to $10, highlighting budget-friendly fashion options.
For many, these prices are a no-brainer. Image created by Alex using Dall E.

I saw a post today listing “The 10 Biggest Wastes of Money (According to ChatGPT),” and I knew before I even clicked that coffee was going to catch a stray. Sure enough, there it was, right along with streaming services, fast fashion, and in-app purchases.

Look, I get the spirit of it. Spend wisely. Be intentional, and all that jazz. But some of these takes sound like they came from someone who’s never had a bad day, a bad outfit, or a bad breakup cured by espresso and Hulu.

So here’s where I disagree, and why you should probably stop taking advice from anyone (or anything) that doesn’t even have tastebuds.

1. Coffee from coffee shops

This one always makes the list, and it tells me the author hasn’t lived a single real Thursday.

They say the average person spends over $1,200 a year on coffee. “That’s enough for a vacation,” they cry.

But to me, coffee shops are the vacation.

That’s where I go to escape my kids, get work done, reset my brain, or just sit in peace and sip. That $5 isn’t just for a drink. It’s for atmosphere, inspiration, some space to breathe.
