I’m going to take care of you. Sign over here,” Mr. Khan said reassuringly.

I knew Mrs. Khan for a long time. She lived in a big house with her husband and daughter down the street. We loved to go for playdates in her home. Every time we went, she fed us. The sweetest homemade lemonade with crunchy buttery garlic sticks or homemade Indian stuffed flatbreads always lured us to play at the Khan residence.

I was friends with her daughter, a young woman who wanted to be just like her mother. She wanted to stay home, have kids, and create a beautiful welcoming space just like her mother had done.

As we grew up, our visits were to study or have serious life discussions. We sat around her large marble dining table chatting and discussing our lives and dreams. Mrs. Khan often sat with us during those times, talking how she chose her college major and the fun she had with her roommates when she studied engineering.

Mr. Khan was a big businessman, someone I hardly saw, but always understood was busy making successful deals all over the country. He looked important, always in a pin-striped suit and dark glasses.
