Something Happening 8 CHAPTER 8 : The Fear of Missing Out (FOMO): Understanding and Overcoming a Modern Anxiety

Something Happening 8 CHAPTER 8

In today's hyper-connected digital world, the Fear of Missing Out, commonly referred to as FOMO, has emerged as a significant psychological phenomenon. Defined as the anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere, FOMO is particularly prevalent among social media users. It reflects a deep-rooted concern that others might be having more rewarding experiences, leading to feelings of inadequacy, loneliness, or dissatisfaction. Although FOMO is not a new concept, technology has amplified its intensity and reach, making it a widespread experience, especially among young adults.

FOMO is largely driven by the curated realities shared on social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Snapchat. These platforms allow users to share selective highlights of their lives—vacations, parties, achievements, and other moments that appear ideal. Observing such content can lead individuals to feel that their own lives are lacking excitement or fulfillment. They may begin to question their choices, compare themselves unfavorably to others, and even feel regretful or anxious about not participating in certain activities or lifestyles.
