Modern Women Publication Updates

We had a great Zoom Mixer call on April 24 with Delia, Erin, and Megan. We’re working on fixing the auto-reminders for our Zoom mixers since some people may have missed out on that.

Our next Zoom Mixer will be on Sunday, May 15 at 10am PDT (Los Angeles), 1pm EDT (New York), 6pm BST (London).

Writing Prompts

For writing prompts, 9 writers shared their Guilty Pleasure in April.

Our next writing prompt for May is ‘A Mom Story.’ This can be about your own mother, a grandmother, you as a mom, a mother you know — anyone who is a mom. Tell us a mom story to celebrate Mother’s Day in May.

New Ko-Fi Page

We set up a Ko-Fi page where you can support our brilliant editors and all the hard work they do for free. Our editing team dedicates hours of their precious personal time to help publish your stories.

Editor’s Picks

Instead of just Erin and Megan sharing their top picks, Delia and Jenny will be joining in sharing their favourites too! We’ll each share 2 great pieces for a total of 8 Editor’s Picks.

Delia Pena-Gay’s Top Picks

Destiny did a pretty good job of breaking down why it's ok to say no. Many people will tell you to say yes more because it will open you up to opportunities or make you more interesting. However, if you don't really mean yes then say no. The only person you’re dishonoring is yourself!

I loved this piece because not only am I guilty of this at times but it was a reminder to take action. As Rachel put it lip service is enough. Repeating daily affirmations isn’t enough if you're not actually practicing what you preach.

E.S. Yates’ Top Picks

Edisana writes a relatable story about how, even in our so-called modern society, women are stilled viewed as “property” by some men. Single women especially seem to need a man in their lives for other men to take the word “No” seriously. Read her story to learn more about how much work our society still needs to do in this area.

This is both a heartbreaking and empowering story about sexual assault and the legacy it holds with a woman for the rest of her life. Stephanie writes about how she is taking back her power years after her life was changed forever.

Jenny Starr✨’s Top Picks

Lila saw an issue that we all have to deal with, growing older. And how do all of us deal with aging? And how do we talk about our differences in public spaces? Can we share without tearing down?

Lucy describes love between partners, its overcoming power, and its connection to both the Divine and childbearing. It paces well and uses accessible language. A great read!

Megan Llorente’s Top Picks

I can relate to Cass’ every word! I used to think the same — that stay-at-home moms must have more time on their hands. Having been a full-time mom for the past 3 years, I can certainly say that’s not true!

Starr shares her vulnerable story and how abuse can take many forms. It’s an important reminder to always be kind and open to those who seek help and support because it takes a lot to do so.

Thanks again for joining us here at Modern Women! We are honoured and enriched by all of your beautiful stories.

With love,
Megan & the Modern Women team
