I don’t know any of Taylor Swift’s or Beyonce’s music, but I know lots of people love them enough to have spent hundreds of dollars on tickets this year.

I hope their fans also at least occasionally turn out for local bands in their own communities, because no matter where you live, I guarantee there are fantastic musicians whose work you will enjoy just as much living and performing near you.

My husband built a recording studio in our attic, which is fun, because we get to have live music in our house. We also like to go out and listen to live music when we can.

It is astounding how talented some of these completely unknown musicians are.

We listen to music differently.

He takes it apart in his mind, appreciating each component separately as well as the holistic result, while I gloss over it and can’t offer much deeper criticism than “I like it” because I have zero musical talent. (I take apart writing as he takes apart music.)

While I’m not a good judge of musical talent, I know I’ve heard some incredible work here in my area, and the people with trained ears agree.
