Poor People Should Not Have Nice Things

Splurges are just for the rich

As you know, the poors should stay in their hovels eating beans and rice, using their landline phones to apply for better jobs.

That is how you know they are good poors who know their place. If they dare to spend money on anything but bare survival, they are bad, bad, bad poors.

You know the type of bad poors I’m talking about. They eat avocado toast and they drink good coffee.

I’m about to be a bad poor.

It’s unfortunate, because up to now I’ve been an exemplary poor.

My husband and I haven’t been exchanging gifts for Christmas or birthdays. We celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary (in the heart of Covid breakouts) with takeout Chinese.

We didn’t spend money to mark our 16th (a year in which my husband was on disability or workers comp for half the year thanks to two knee replacements and a broken leg) either. His ability to walk without pain was gift enough.

We were good poors.

Poor, of course, is a relative term.

We are not destitute. We own our own home, but it’s in an area where housing is cheap. We…
