Learning Chinese is not easy, especially for English speakers. The U.S. State Department classifies Chinese as a meaning that it requires 88 weeks, or 2200 class hours in order to master. That's a lot of time.
However, I found that as long as you put in the time and effort, the results will be well worth it. After six years of learning Chinese and five incredible years living in Taiwan, I’ve picked up some tips and insights that transformed my Chinese language journey.
I hope my experiences can guide you and make your path to mastering Chinese smoother and more enjoyable than mine was!
1. Familiarize Yourself with Chinese
First, get familiar with Chinese by listening to others speak (or sing). This often gets overlooked when people start learning a language from scratch. However, it is important because you need to know how the language you want to learn sounds. When you hear others speak, at the very least, you’ll know they are speaking Chinese, even if you don’t understand it.
For me, as a Vietnamese, I was quite familiar with Chinese as I watched Chinese movies growing up…
