The Immigrant
A Poem
I met this girl by chance
when we were both waiting
at the subway station, underground
U-bahn
She
for her train
And I
for someone to show me the way
She helped me politely
and asked questions about me
my life, my country
my language, my accent, my color.
She
A German
found it all so interesting
our lives, our culture, our food
our issues, our poverty, our pollution
everything so cool, adventurous, spiritual, divine
And I
tried my best to explain
our problems, our challenges, overpopulation
She
born in the western part of our world
nodded all over again
Oh, so interesting so unique so cool
‘One day’, she told me
‘I will take a long sabbatical
and live the life
of India as an
expat.’
