Writing to Remember

Because life is not a blank page

The one piece of advice I would give to any aspiring writer who finds themselves staring at a blank screen and a flashing cursor is this,

“If you can’t write, read.
If you can’t read, go for a walk.”

I remember someone sharing this nugget of knowledge with me a while ago. I have heard myself repeating it to a writer friend recently, though I was never sure where the original quote came from.

A quick internet search reveals that these words of wisdom, that resonated with me, appear to have been penned by an author called I make a note to discover more about her when I next sit down at my laptop.

This is almost a daily ritual now. I get up, put the coffee on, open the lid and start typing. I write because I don’t wish to forget. And if the words aren’t ready to make an appearance, I read.

In situations where my focus won’t allow me to do either, I will find a physical activity to settle me, and often I will go outside for a long, soothing and restorative walk.
