I’ve been doing large-scale barter for over two decades. I am a registered barter broker with the IRS, and belong to many networks of barter brokers. Most people are shocked when they hear how huge the barter industry is.

About 85% of US Fortune 500 companies use barter, and some estimates indicate that Barter transactions make up as much 40% of the world’s economy. You might ask, “If barter is such a great system for growing your business, then why wasn’t it more popular before barter exchanges came onto the scene?” One of the great limitations to the growth of the barter industry was that cash was simply easier to use than barter, and most people used cash to conduct business. Thus, in a weak economy where cash was in short supply, the use of barter naturally expanded. When the economy became strong again, the use of cash increased, and barter decreased. This is all changing. In the last decade, the use of credit as a typical way of doing business has expanded dramatically. Most credit is similar. If you are eligible for it, you get it, use it, and pay it back with interest. In this sense, there is little difference between a credit line from a bank and one from a barter exchange. The one difference is that it is easier to get a credit line from a barter exchange than from a bank, even if you have a poor credit…
