How Medium Memberships Work

I am the type of person who likes to find out the technicalities of how things work, and for me, Medium is no different. I have documented every discovery and updated the articles when I come across new information.

What bothered me is how Medium pays us writers with the Partnership Program. It doesn’t sound like a sustainable business plan, and until I read this article, apparently it wasn’t working for them either until recently.

So what changed, and how do they pay us writers?

Well, it’s quite simple; they don’t. We pay each other.

As you can see from the above image, which was taken from the Medium Help Center, a portion of your earnings goes to paying for other writers’ works. Even clicking on the Learn More section just directs you to the Partner Program page that says:
