Do You Also Miss 2D Animation? You Are Not Alone
History, stages, and recent developments (and hope!)
The beginning of the 21st century proclaimed death of the old technology in the entertainment industry.
With some exceptions, major studios ceased producing projects with 2D animation in the early 2000s.¹² The only choice left for the fans and connoisseurs of the “old but gold” 2D animation was to go and rewatch the masterpieces of the previous century or to grab onto any rarely produced indie movie, most likely with a low budget and, even more likely, not a feature length but a short film.
Or so it seemed.
Recent animation releases brought hope to the despairing with the integration of 2D and 3D animation technologies which led to a birth of an authentic, never tried before style.
The animators and critics wondered if the 2D animation was making a comeback and if it meant to stay in the industry for years to come.
A close study of the animation industry and the recent “comeback” of the 2D technology via integration in the several successful releases draws a particular trajectory of the relationship between the old and the new technology in visual story production.
