News Briefs: The U.S. has Lost Its Mind
Four examples of national madness
There are lots of headlines about outrageous injustices happening in the U.S. right now. I’m going to focus on four lesser-known stories that illuminate the twisted logic and warped sensibilities that have seeped into our culture.
1. Not welcome here
A school district in Idaho posted in her sixth grade classroom. They believed the signs might create division or controversy. What disturbing messages are upsetting the school administration? One of the signs says, “Everyone is welcome here.” The other offender reads, “In this room, everyone is welcome, important, accepted, respected, encouraged, valued, equal.”
You might think these are actually the opposite of controversial, but not in this district. The teacher was told that some people saw welcoming everyone as a political opinion and they might have a different opinion. The teacher told one interviewer, “There’s no way you’ll convince me that the differing view they’re trying to protect … is not racist.”
Both signs are decorated with outstretched, welcoming hands, and the hands had a variety of skin color tones. At one point the school administrators said these images were the core of the problem.
