I Like Squarer Formats

I was going to start by saying that one of the joys of having a smartphone is the facility of also using it as a camera… but since my purchase of that essential modern accessory I’ve found that during the past decade, all I’ve basically used mine for is taking photographs, and not making phone calls!

A couple of years ago I became a more serious mobile phone photographer. I’d been a contributor to the Alamy stock image enterprise for many years and decided to also contribute images from my iPhone using their app (not yet available for Android users, unfortunately).

I think that having been ‘conditioned’ to using square images on Instagram I’d adopted the ‘look’ of square images whenever I took a photo on my phone. Square is a format I’ve liked more and more since I became hooked on photography as an amateur back in the mid-60s. Although my first camera was a 35mm Nikkormat FS — the cheapest Nikon without a meter, and now scarce to find — the second system I built up, as a professional, was around the Hasselblad 500C and its sister the SWC super-wide.
