Why Women are Ditching Dating Apps
Bumble’s Big Change
Recently, Bumble changed its policy of women making the first move to giving women the option to provide an “opening move” which gives a question for men to respond to. This has sparked a conversation about gender roles in dating, and perhaps the limitations of feminism in the cultural sphere; making the first move gave women control over who they spoke to on the app, .
Does Bumble’s decision represent a shift back to traditional gender roles? Maybe. It’s a small thing, but in the context of Andrew Tate, abortion rights being repealed, and the general reactionary trend we’re seeing in this country and around the world, it could be a tiny sign of the times. But this decision became part of a wider conversation, about how even with that vetting feature, there were still weirdos on Bumble. ; I’m not using them anymore, either.
Just for context and perspective, I’m not the type of person who likes to date or hook up just for fun. I used to, but in the end, I’m too sensitive for it. I don’t like to date people if I don’t see a future with them; to me it’s a waste of time, and I don’t like to get hurt. So, my critique of dating culture is through that lens.
