The Crime at the Crossroads
RWDouble Drabble 2.0.141–Contemplative
The word for today is contemplative. In this story, it is used in a crime story where the protagonist stands at a crossroads.
“You have given contemplative thought to this, Alex? You know you stand at a crossroads.”
“Mr. Andras, all the swamp people think it’s true. But if I’m going to work with you, I need to know the full truth. It seems to me you’re sacrificing honest and straight-forward talk on the altar of profits.
“That may well be, but you’ll have a very hard time proving it. You see, the relationship between folklore, ambition, and the supernatural is in every story here in the swamps. There are no clear facts on the bayou.”
“Perhaps, but I have no interest in folklore. I’m suspicious of ambition, and I don’t believe in the supernatural. I’m more concerned with the crossroads of your desperation, your temptations, and the price of success that you’re willing to pay.
At that, Mr Adras dropped to one knee, pulled out his pistol, and fired. He hit the lamp post, then, in pitch darkness, fired at me. I moved quickly to my right as he fired his second shot to the left. I leaped at the flash of his pistol and brought down my prey.
