‘I think it’s best we don’t see each other tonight.’
It felt like the air had left my lungs. I stared at Ethan who sat in his office chair behind his desk. ‘You want to stop seeing me?’ My voice cracked.
‘Oh, god, Esmé, no!’ Ethan bounced up from his seat as he said the exclamation and leapt to me, placing his hands on my arms.
Try as I may to blink back my tears, they still fell from my eyes. I whispered tearfully, ‘I thought you had grown tired of me already.’ I didn’t know why I thought that. Maybe something in my past with Brent had triggered the fear.
‘Esmé, no.’ Ethan wrapped his arms around me and I buried my face in his chest. After a moment, he cupped my cheeks to peer into my eyes. ‘I finally have you. I’m not ready to let you go.’ His jaw was tight. ‘I don’t think I’ll ever want to let you go.’ My heart soared as much as it was pained. Ethan gently wiped my tears with his thumbs. ‘I just worry that if we see each other every night, Brent will grow suspicious, and I don’t want to put you in that position.’
