Lightning struck my leg, electrifying the web of veins, sinew, and fascia beneath the skin. I painfully felt that everything is connected.
It bolted up from my knee, up my thigh, and into my glutes. I buckled on the rock, catching myself with the other leg. What the hell was going on?
I tried to run again, but could only hop to the next rock. Sure enough, lightning through my right side folded me completely.
Below me lay everything. I had just summited Elidir Fawr, one of the highest peaks in Wales, having run up through the trees and the quarries from the valley below. My legs felt good. They were strong.
I was getting back to the fitness that had helped me complete a mountain ultramarathon a year earlier. This didn’t make sense, so I took another step into lightning, striking in the same place over and over.
Walking wasn’t any better, but there was no other choice. I had to make it back down. So I winced through each step for six miles down the mountain to home.
