Ask yourself these questions, and you can turn any challenge into a meaningful opportunity for growth

A man struggles to push a large rock uphill. His body strains with effort, yet he keeps going. This represents the personal hero’s journey — where each of us faces challenges unique to our life story. Like Sisyphus, we may feel the weight of struggle, but we have the strength to keep pushing. Our pain isn’t pointless; it can shape us, grow us, and give meaning to our journey.

I’ve learned that we’re each on a personal hero’s journey, with specific obstacles and challenges unique to our life story.

Whatever we’re going through at any moment was made for exactly us because we have what it takes to face it. We can handle it — even if it doesn’t feel like it. If we couldn’t handle them, our problems would have already killed us.

Therefore, we possess the resilience to overcome every trial and the power to transform our struggles into profound personal growth by giving them meaning.

So when suffering or hardship shows up, take a moment to pause and ask:

  • What is this challenge here to teach me?
  • How can I use this pain to help others?
  • What unique mix of experiences and insights can I share with the world?

When we ask these questions, we give our suffering meaning.

When I was four, my mom died.

I was raised by my grandmother with six cousins who were also orphans. We were very poor.
