4 Reasons Hollywood Doesn’t Deserve to be Saved
Why the new generation of filmmakers needs to leave Southern California in the past
As we continue to watch the Sean “Diddy” Combs trial and begin another summer of lackluster box office blockbusters, once again, the talk has turned to Hollywood and the state of the film industry. It’s no secret that California has become one of the most expensive places to shoot movies (or do anything, for that matter). Studios are terrified of taking any risk at all on either new ideas or new filmmakers — God forbid both. And now, with all the toxicity, assault, and abuse within the production industry centered in this LA suburb having come to light, many people are asking what we can do to save Hollywood from ruin. I’m here to suggest a radical idea: we can’t save Hollywood, and we shouldn’t.
Hollywood, in my opinion, has become an entrenched cesspool of toxic bosses, chauvinistic producers, and pedophiles of every stripe. It’s so entrenched that it can’t be fixed. Does that mean the film industry is done for good? Of course not! The film industry is not Hollywood. The film industry is for filmmakers. Directors, writers, actors, producers, artists, and more. The film industry has moved before — from the area around New York and Atlantic…
