This was a song we used to sing in Sunday School.
I remember it as clear as day.
I’m sitting cross-legged on the church carpet, surrounded by other kids in their Sunday best — itchy dresses, stiff collars, clip-on ties. Up front, our Sunday School teacher is strumming an acoustic guitar, her fingers moving over the chords with the confidence of someone who’s played this song a hundred times before. She’s smiling wide, bobbing her head in rhythm, motioning for us to clap along.
And we do.
Some of the younger kids clap their hands together off-beat, grinning like this is the best part of their morning. The older ones — kids like me — sing along a little less enthusiastically, but still loud enough to be heard.
Because we believe it.
Every word.
