The Missing Sister

A drabble is a 100–word piece of writing. Not 99 words. Not 101. Exactly 100! :)

I wrote this drabble in response to the following prompt:

The Object Biography
Choose an ordinary object in your home. Write its life story, from manufacture to present day. Where has it been? Who has owned it? What has it witnessed? Look at everyday items in a creative way.

(The source(s) of the prompt are listed at the bottom of this post.)

I think I did a pretty terrible job of following the actual instructions of the prompt (that tends to happen), but I’m generally happy with how the drabble turned out.

This drabble was inspired by my crystal vase, as shown in the photo, and another vase just like it that my grandparents had.

I called it The Missing Sister.

Without further ado, here it is:

Death came for my grandmother. A message came for me.

Did I want anything from Grandma and Grandpa’s house?

The crystal vase, I should have said. The one I gave them for their 75th wedding anniversary.

I want it back now, to come and be a friend to mine. To be a sister.
