May 13th Surprise for Him
Beyond Flowers and Chocolates
May 13th then arrived, and I had fully intended to trade the usual roses and traditional chocs for something different this time around. They’re fine, I suppose, but this time I had something else in mind for him. Something that just yelled “you” and “us” aloud.
I’d been secretly scheming for weeks. Little hints were dropped, apologies made vaguely for my disappearing acts (mostly to that pottery class I’d enrolled us in). He was on to *something*, his eyebrows doing that cute little questioning arch they do. “Just a normal Tuesday, love,” I’d reply, trying to sound casual while my insides were doing the happy dance of excitement.
Cut forward to this evening. He came in, weary from work, the familiar “hey” a little drawn out. I took him fairly informally out to the balcony, fairy lights I’d strung there softly shimmering. His eyes widened. “What is all this?”
And then I pointed to the table. No flowers anywhere. Two pottery wheels end to end, wedges of clay waiting patiently in line. His jaw came close to hitting the floor. “Pottery? Seriously?”
