How to Navigate Jakarta’s Public Transport Like a Local
And not get lost in the process
Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, is a city that never sleeps. It’s packed with people, traffic, and a never-ending hustle. With its narrow roads, confusing intersections, and unpredictable congestion, getting around can feel like an adventure (or a nightmare, depending on your luck).
Whether you’re a tourist exploring Jakarta’s must-visit spots, an expat heading to a local restaurant, or a newcomer commuting to work, navigating the streets of Jakarta is no easy feat.
Even for locals, a short trip can turn into a long and exhausting journey. But don’t worry! Jakarta offers various public transportation options — from trains to motorcycle taxis (which you won’t find in most Western countries).
The trick is knowing which one to take, when to avoid rush hours, and how to use them efficiently. With some navigation skills, Google Maps, and a little guidance, here’s how I (a local who has lived in Jakarta for over 20 years) travel the city with ease.
